The Paugussett Trail is a Blue Blazed Trail that has a grand total distance of 13 miles. Starting at Buddington Rd in Shelton and ending at East Village in Monroe, CT.
Our hike encompassed the approximate 4.5 mile distance from Buddington Rd, to the entrace of Indian Well State Park(RT 110) and then we retraced our steps back to our starting point for grand total of 9 miles. This is a moderately aggressive hike due to it's distance and a handful of moderately steep inclines/declines. With a long lunch break and frequent stops for pictures/rest breaks it took us over 5 hours.
The terrain was fun and ever changing especially during the first half of the hike with numerous land marks capturing our interest!
Numerous bridges built by eagle scouts/boy scout troops were ever present during multiple sections of the hike.
Thanks to all who contributed to these bridges, this trail wouldn't be possible without them!
Eklund Garden was our first major landmark. This was the site of a former log home that has been transitioned into a blooming native species plant garden. It looks a little bleak here in January but can't wait to visit during the summer bloom!
Hope Lake, so peaceful!
Rest break!
The trail merges with the dog park trail
Then crosses Rt 108 near the dog park
Approaching Silent Waters
Silent Waters
Through some fields
Cross the street onto Mayflower Lane
Follow the blue blazes on the curb until you re-enter the forest
The trail meanders downhill approaching Rt 110
...to the entrance of Indian Well State Park. We then turned around and trekked back to our starting point. However for those of you wanting a shorter hike you can park a second car at the first parking lot in Indian Well's and utilize the 2 car method. Or those of you wanting a longer hike, carrying on through the State Park. We'll highlight the rest of the Paugussett Trail in a future blog.
