Berea Wiffle’s Story

Berea Wiffle started in 2014 when 4 of us teenage guys decided to get a small Wiffle Ball league for us and our friends. We grew to a larger, organized league in 2015. Starting in February, we had a BWL Combine and Draft. 4 “General Managers” picked players at a live draft party. These teams lasted way longer than we expected. Starting in early April, 4 teams with custom jerseys showed up in the cold rain and played games all day. This continued all the way until September. We upgraded our field and built a strikezone, backstop, and scoreboard. We had several sponsoring seed companies that supplied us with large amounts of flavored sunflower seeds. Our league played over 50 games, leading to Playoffs and a World Series. We had a great year and even got an article about us in the October issue of The Berean.

In 2016, as we are growing up and becoming busier, we wanted to open our league to people of all ages. We decided on hosting community tournaments with teams of 3-6 players. We hosted our first in July, and it was a success. 12 teams competed for 2 age group championships. The money we raised was donated to the Berea Animal Shelter. Everyone loved it and wanted to come back. We had our next Tournament in early August, and again had a blast. Here’s a video: https://youtu.be/150eo9HcmEI , profits again going to Berea Animal shelter. 12 teams playing on one tiny field was becoming a bit chaotic. We spent the next few weeks building a second field! Our third tournament was held Labor Day weekend and was easily our league’s best. 16 teams competed in 2 age groups again. Kids ages from 8 to 17 and an energetic group of adults all competed for the trophies! Here’s a video of that weekend: https://youtu.be/KQaMxc7bj9A

In total, we’ve played over 100 games on our fields this year and raised over $250 for the Berea Animal Rescue Fund! We are going to continue these open tournaments as we grow. We were recently featured on WKYC Channel 3! Here’s a video: http://www.wkyc.com/sports/biggest-winners-for-thursday-sept-15th/319056166

We are now hosting our 5th tournament of 2016 and cannot wait for more. Stay tuned to our Instagram, Twitter, and Youtube. @bereawiffle
